Utilization of Oil Palm Shells (Elaeis Guineensis Jacq) as Alternative Fuel (Briquettes)

Abstract

Palm kernel shells have great potential as an alternative fuel. One way to utilize them is by processing them into charcoal briquettes. Biomass energy is the right choice to replace fossil fuels, because it is renewable and does not contain sulfur so it is environmentally friendly. In this study, palm kernel shells were processed through a carbonization process and mixed with organic adhesive in the form of tapioca flour. This study aims to analyze the ash content, volatile matter, fixed carbon, and calorific value of the resulting briquettes. The results show that briquettes from palm kernel shells have great potential as an environmentally friendly alternative fuel.
