ABSTRACT
This study aims to design a two-chamber communal septic tank system as a sustainable sanitation solution for densely populated residential areas lacking centralized wastewater management. The research was conducted in Jalan Tingang XX, Palangka Raya, involving three households with a total of 15 residents. The methodology included field surveys, analysis of primary and secondary data, and calculation of tank capacity based on SNI 2398:2021 and Ministry of Public Works Regulation No. 4 of 2020. The results indicate that a two-chamber septic tank with a total volume of 4.4 m³ and a retention time of approximately six days effectively optimizes sedimentation and anaerobic decomposition processes. This system is suitable for limited land areas, efficient in space and construction costs, and produces effluent that is safe for the environment. The communal septic tank model is highly recommended for densely populated settlements without access to centralized sanitation systems.
